Processes related to the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) have been digitized in the recent past. Thus, it has become convenient to apply and receive a driving license. Earlier, applying for a driving license was a task in itself. One would receive the driving license after going through various difficulties. And in such a scenario, if the driving license was lost, it was nothing but a disaster. Nowadays, it has become easier to apply for a duplicate driving license. Importance of a Driving License
A driving license is a crucial identity-related document. Nowadays, driving license comes in a smart card format instead of the traditional diary-like format. The new format incorporates your biometric information and displays your photo as well.
It is illegal to drive a vehicle without a valid driving license. You need to avail the right kind of driving license to drive a particular type of car. For example, you need to avail a commercial driving license for driving a commercial vehicle. You need to renew your driving license before its expiry date to stay on the right side of the law while driving your vehicle. In case you lose your driving license, you should apply for a duplicate driving license as soon as possible.
Duplicate License Application
A duplicate license is a document that is an official document issued by a Regional Transport Office in case you lose or damage your original driving license. You need to make a duplicate driving license application to initiate the process. You can download the online license form for duplicate driving license from your state’s RTO’s website. Note that all Indian RTO websites do not provide this facility. However, they are in the process of going digital. In case your nearest RTO does not allow you to download the online license form for duplicate driving license, you will have to personally visit the RTO office and get the form.
List of Documents
You need to submit the following documents while applying for a duplicate driving license:
● L.L.D. form. This form is meant to intimate the authorities about the loss or damage caused to the original driving license and is an application form for a duplicate driving license.
● If your original driving license was damaged, the same needs to be submitted in its damaged condition.
● If your original driving license was lost, you need to file a First Information Report (FIR) with the police station assigned for the area where your driving license was lost.
● Address proof. Example – Electricity bill in your name, house agreement, etc.
● Passport-sized photos
● Government-approved Age proof document. Example – Passport, Birth certificate, etc.
Once you fill the online application form, affix your photograph on it, attach relevant documents and submit it to the RTO office from where you had received your original driving license. You will not have to undergo a physical driving test in case of a duplicate driving license. You shall receive a receipt after making the application. You can use this receipt as a driving license proof till the time you receive your duplicate driving license. Your duplicate driving license will reach your address via post.
If you feel your original driving license is slightly damaged and might be further damaged in the near future, it is better to get a duplicate driving license before the original gets completely damaged. Keep your driving license in a safe place, do not keep it loitering around in your car or desk.
