The right alloy of metal can make or break your project. Whether you are looking for titanium for automobile parts or steel for structural support systems, it is a good idea to know what type of metal is recommended, what type of tensile strength you need and what type of vendor will have your alloy.

What Type of Metal?

Although 6al 4v titanium is a common alloy of a strong metal, it is not recommended for every project, so it is a good idea to see what others have had work or not work for the same type of build. For example, titanium alloys are usually used in aeronautics and medical implants because of their strength, weight and hypoallergenic properties. They can even be used in some 3D printers.

What Type of Tensile Strength?

Different metals and different alloys of those metals will have varying tensile strengths. You can usually find charts for this strength online to help you narrow down your choices with less research and math involved. These charts can also show you the difference in strength between as-consolidated, cast and wrought varieties of the alloys.

What Type of Vendor?

Most of the time you will be able to find the alloy you want from either the manufacturer or a vendor associated with one. This can help you narrow down your choices to the ones which carry the type of alloy you need. It is important to keep in mind that you can get metal alloys in bars or wires depending on your needs and manufacturing capabilities.

Finding the right alloy for your project can be as easy as reading off the parts list or it can be as difficult as researching what is available and how it will function in your application. For instance, if you are 3D printing medical implants, then you will probably have a specific type of wire that you need to have in stock.
